Top nine 2026: the trend
A grid of nine posts has been the December ritual for years. Here is where it comes from, when it peaks, and what changed in 2026.
Where the ritual comes from
The 3x3 grid is the shape of an Instagram profile, not a feature. Tools appeared around 2018 to fill that grid with the year's posts; press coverage that December — including Refinery29 — turned a small utility into a trend.

Doing it by hand? The app ranks the posts you published and exports both sizes.

When it peaks
The last week of December, from the 27th to the 31st. Searches for the phrase rise through November, spike in that window, and fall back in the first days of January.
What changed in 2026
Two things. The format is now less about the prettiest nine and more about which metric chose them, and the long-form video push on Instagram means recaps increasingly sit next to video work rather than compete with it.

What is honest to claim
No official numbers exist: Instagram does not publish top nine statistics. Any figure you read — including the ones on competitor sites — comes from the tools themselves, not from Instagram.
Does Instagram have an official top nine feature?
No. It has never shipped one; the format is user-made.

The app builds this card from your published posts.
Prevz reads your Instagram account (optional, read-only), ranks your nine by likes, saves or comments, and exports a Story at 1080 × 1920 or a Post at 1080 × 1350.
